Man found in hotel died of natural causes

The man who was found dead on the grounds of the Downhill House Hotel, Ballina last Thursday died of natural causes. A post mortem was carried out on the body of Mr Michael McDermot by the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy.

Ballina Arts Centre fundraising

Councillor Michelle Mulherin, chairperson of the Ballina Theatre and Arts Centre fundraising committee, would like to thank all who generously supported and assisted the fundraising events for the new theatre for Ballina, especially those who attended the literary brunch at the Downhill House Hotel and those who gave to the collection at the Mayo/Dublin match.

Support for Ballina theatre needed

A number of national and international artists will be visiting Ballina this weekend to support the campaign for a new theatre for the town. Part funding of €4.3 million was allocated for the new theatre from the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism; Mayo County Council; and Ballina Town Council at the end of last year. However, in order to secure this funding, a further €500,000 must be raised in the local community by July 2009. A fundraising committee was set up earlier in the year to build on the good work already done by previous interest groups and a number of fundraising events have already taken place.

A large group of influential golf writers from Sweden arrived in Mayo last week. They are all members of the important Swedish Golf Writers’ Association, here to experience at first-hand some of the fantastic golf courses on offer in counties Mayo and Sligo.

Beard shave in Erris

A local businessman will have his beard shaved off on Friday May 15 in the Western Strands Hotel at 9.30pm in aid of the Erris Cancer Support Group. Please support.
